in nutrition science at Purdue University with a minor in biology. She spent two years in Dr. GletsuMiller’s lab where she completed an honors thesis and was part of the Transdisciplinary Obesity Prevention Research Science (TOPRS) program. Upon graduation she will continue doing research under a pediatric endocrinologist at the Indiana School of Medicine. She plans to attend medical school in the future. Nana Gletsu-Miller is currently an assistant professor of nutrition science at Purdue University. She obtained a PhD in nutrition and metabolism from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, in 1998. Her dissertation studies involved the effect of obesity on insulin signal transduction in the cell nucleus. Thereafter she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology at Emory University, Atlanta, with Kenneth Bernstein, studying the transcriptional regulation of angiotensin converting enzyme. In 2002 she transitioned to focus on human studies in the field of bariatric surgery, in the Department of Surgery, Emory University, as a research instructor. In 2006 she became an assistant professor of research in surgery in the Hubert Department of Global Health. Her studies focused on the mechanisms responsible for resolution of type 2 diabetes following bariatric surgery Gletsu-Miller joined the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue in 2011. Her studies investigate the nutritional status of bariatric surgery patients and focus on deficiencies in iron, copper, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids. Copper Chaperone for Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase is a sensitive biomarker of mild copper deficiency induced by moderately high intakes of zinc
BACKGROUND Small increases in zinc (Zn) consumption above recommended amounts have been shown to reduce copper (Cu) status in experimental animals and humans. Recently, we have reported that copper chaperone for Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (CCS) protein level is increased in tissues of overtly Cu-deficient rats and proposed CCS as a novel biomarker of Cu status. METHODS Weanling male Wistar ra...
متن کاملCopper deficiency mimicking myelodysplastic syndrome
Copper is an essential element for all living organisms, because it has key activities in the metabolic enzymes such as cytochrome oxidase and superoxide dismutase, and in the proteins essential for iron homeostasis such as ceruloplasmin and hephaestin. In humans, the daily copper requirement is low, therefore copper deficiency is not so frequently a condition. However, we should be aware that ...
متن کاملDecreased Erythrocyte CCS Content is a Biomarker of Copper Overload in Rats
Copper (Cu) is an essential trace metal that is toxic in excess. It is therefore important to be able to accurately assess Cu deficiency or overload. Cu chaperone for Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (CCS) protein expression is elevated in tissues of Cu-deficient animals. Increased CCS content in erythrocytes is particularly sensitive to decreased Cu status. Given the lack of a non-invasive, sensitiv...
متن کامل[Alopecia in women with severe and morbid obesity who undergo bariatric surgery].
INTRODUCTION Bariatric surgery leads to a significant body weigh reduction although it is associated to a higher risk of presenting some nutritional deficiencies. A common complication, little studied and mainly related to zinc deficiency is alopecia. OBJECTIVES To compare the nutritional status of zinc, iron, copper, selenium and protein-visceral in women with different degrees of hair loss ...
متن کاملBiomarkers of copper status: a brief update.
The essentiality of copper (Cu) in humans is demonstrated by various clinical features associated with deficiency, such as anaemia, hypercholesterolaemia and bone malformations. Despite significant effort over several decades a sensitive and specific Cu status biomarker has yet to be identified. The present article updates a comprehensive review recently published by the authors which assesses ...
